Discovering the Divinity of Death

It was a windy eve during Covid when the phone rang, November of 2020. The usual chipper voice of her uncle was dim and quiet as he said, “Your mom has been moved to hospice. You’re able to come see her tomorrow.”

The next morning, she arrived. Family members were there, crying. In seeing her mother unconscious and feeling the heavy energy, something took over and she began to move through the room, thoughtfully placing items. A crystal grid at her mother’s feet. A crown of rosemary on her mother’s head. Amethyst stones (mothers favorite) placed in cold hands. Sweet sounds of her mom’s most loved music, native flute, softly playing in her mother’s ear. A dowse of frankincense and lavender filled the room. Energies transforming into comfort and serenity. She had created a sacred portal for transition. She sat next to her mom and chanted, as she gently placed her hands over the areas of her mother’s frail and broken body, opening the channels, giving last rites. She held space as an ancient doula that day, as she honored her mother's wishes.

In Spring of 2021, I received my certification as an End-of-Life Doula, through INELDA.

​Wow! The process of that certification course was the most intense process I had ever gone through. I had to look at my own death! The exercises brought all my pain, insecurities, worries and fears, to the surface. It also brought insight, comfort, and healing with the methods taught. I didn’t realize how many conditioned ideas & beliefs I had about death that lurked in my unconscious mind, creating uncomfortable sensations. I was very unaware of my own energy and feelings around death and dying. I had a lot of misinformation about death too. My journey into becoming a death doula brought me to a new level of existence in life and with death. I’ve freed what wasn’t needed. I made peace with the parts of me that were disharmonious.

Being in the presence of those dying and witnessing spirit is incredibly humbling and puts a great deal into perspective. As a death doula, spending time with those who’ve been given the chance to come to peace with their life, just before their death, has been incredibly rewarding. These experiences have expanded my own ideals about what’s truly important. How I want to walk this life of mine. I don't think I would have discovered the divine knowledge with such detail, if I hadn't come to understand my feelings around death. The blessings to have tools to help people gain a sense of peace at the end of life, when the inevitable is at the door, is awe inspiring.

But why wait until then?

During my training I discovered deep fears, discomfort & even paralyzed feelings that took up space in my body around my death and the preconceived notions about death of those I love. I was taught valuable practices and exercises… “tools” to dismantle those worries & fears. I was taught how to create a safe container & provide an opportunity to understand release and heal the suffering around both living and dying.

Dani Kilpatrick is a transformational facilitator, Reiki Master, and sound healer. She has worked in the field of personal growth and spiritual development for several years and helps people connect with their inner wisdom and divine healing abilities. Dani brings a diverse and unique skillset along with her passion for holding deep, intentional space to this event centered around the topic of death and dying.

Having experienced her own crippling anxieties around the topic of death since childhood, Dani’s journey to understand and nurture those fears led her to the work she embodies and offers today. Her avoidance towards this inevitable event eventually blossomed into a curiosity towards a greater acceptance of the beauty death can bring.

As a result of her personal experiences with death and dying, Dani has a deep understanding of the importance of honoring the sacredness of the dying process and the ceremony that death truly is. She believes that everyone is capable of finding comfort within this darkness and that once you do, it will ignite a spark for you to live more purposefully. Dani’s journey towards acceptance in this area is what acted as a launchpad for her to start living a life of conscious intention. Once she stopped avoiding her own death, only then could she experience life. She brings her gifts of Reiki energy healing, sound healing, and co-facilitation to this event, providing a safe and connected space for community members to process any lingering fears, anxieties, or questions they have about their eventual transition into the afterlife.
